Le projet BEROUAG s’inscrit dans le cadre d’une coopération internationale avec la Tunisie (INP) et la Catalogne (ICAC et UB) et a pour but l’étude architecturale et iconographique d’un monument aux dimensions imposantes (50 x 9 m), qui se dresse, isolé, au sommet du djebel Berouag, à quelques kms du site numide d’Althiburos. Construit en grand appareil à joints vifs, il est orné d’un décor triomphal où alternent mannequins cuirassés et boucliers décorés de bustes. Par sa situation et par comparaison avec des édifices numides similaires (Chemtou, Kbor Klib), ce monument pourrait avoir été commandité par un roi numide à la fin de l’époque hellénistique (IIe s.-début Ier s. av. J.-C.) : il s’inscrit dans les édifices d’apparat (commémoratif ? triomphal ? funéraire ?) largement influencés par les modèles architecturaux et les cartons de l’art hellénistique en vigueur dans une grande partie du bassin méditerranéen.

The BEROUAG project is part of an international cooperation with Tunisia (INP) and Catalonia (ICAC and UB), which aims to complete the architectural and iconographic study of an imposing monument (50 x 9 m), which rises, isolated, at the top of Djebel el Berouag, a few kilometers from the Numidian site of Althiburos. Constructed as a large apparatus with vivid seals, it is adorned with a triumphal decoration of armoured mannequins and shields decorated with busts. By its situation, and in comparison with similar numbed edifices (Chemtou, Kbor Klib), this monument could have been commissioned by a Numidian king at the end of the Hellenistic period (2nd century - early 1st century BC): it is inscribed in the regal edifices (commemorative? triumphal? funerary?) largely influenced by the architectural models and maps of Hellenistic art in full force in a large part of the Mediterranean basin.
