ARCHEAPOT : ARCHEologie de l’Artisanat POTier vinicole en Narbonnaise centrale (2016-2017)

Le projet «ARCHEologie de l’Artisanat POTier vinicole en narbonnaise centrale» a pour objectif de finaliser par une série de recherches archéomagnétiques, architecturales et anthracologiques, l’étude des fours à amphores vinaires de trois ateliers de potiers situés dans la vallée de l’Hérault (cité de Béziers). Les trois ateliers se répartissent dans un secteur de quelques km2 dans lequel se trouve aussi l’atelier de Soumaltre/Aspiran, fouillé en 1995 et qui a déjà bénéficié de deux publications (1996 et 2004). Deux des fours de cet atelier seront intégrés à l’étude architecturale.
L’atelier de Contours exploré exhaustivement en 2004 (dir. St. Mauné) et les lots anthracologiques restent à étudier tandis que 7 des 9 fours fouillés doivent faite l’objet d’une analyse architecturale comparative poussée. Le reste du dossier est achevé et rédigé (datations AMG, analyses physicochimiques des productions, études archéologiques et céramologiques).
L’atelier de Saint-Bézard à Aspiran a été fouillé entre 2005 et 2013 (dir. St. Mauné et Ch. Carrato). Les datations AMG ont été réalisées (9 fours) et les fours 10, 12 et 3 ont été totalement étudiés ; les charbons de bois (seulement 2 lots) restent à étudier. Deux fours du Ier s. feront l’objet d’une étude poussée. Ces données seront utilisées dans le cadre des comparaisons établies dans la monographie et l’article Estagnola.
L’atelier de l’Estagnola à Aspiran a été fouillé en 2014 et 2015 et ce dossier sera clôturé en juillet 2016 (dir. St. Mauné et O. Bourgeon). Trois des 5 fours fouillés feront l’objet d’une étude architecturale et les 5 fours seront datés par AMG. Les lots de charbons sont abondants, de très bonne qualité et seront exhaustivement traités.
Les objectifs et apports scientifiques sont multiples :
- Mettre à disposition de la communauté scientifique, une série de réflexion et de conclusions portant sur l’architecture, le volume et les capacités de production d’une série de 15 fours (13 à étudier, 3 déjà faits) datés entre le début du Ier s. et la première moitié du IIe s. ap. J.-C., tous situés dans un secteur de quelques km2 où les recherches sur la question de l’artisanat potier et de la viticulture ont été très actives depuis 20 ans.
- Permettre de mesurer précisément les évolutions technologiques grâce aux chronologies très serrées procurées par les datations AMG et l’utilisation de la modélisation chronologique bayésienne (logiciel chronomodel).
- Permettre avec les analyses anthracologiques d’aborder la question du combustible et de préciser quelles ont été les stratégies d’approvisionnement en bois des maîtres fourniers ; les données de l’Estagnola permettront de répondre aux interrogations sur le portage de bois sur l’Hérault, sur la présence d’une forêt alluviale installée au Haut-Empire, sur la ripisylve du fleuve ainsi que sur l’existence d’une zone boisée située entre le bassin de Villeveyrac et la vallée de l’Hérault.

The aim of the "ARCHEologie de l'Artisanat POTier vinicole en narbonnaise centrale" project is to finalise, through a series of archaeomagnetic, architectural and anthracological research, the study of the amphorae furnaces of three pottery workshops located in the Hérault valley (city of Béziers). The three workshops are located in an area of a few km2 where the Soumaltre/Aspiran workshop is also located, which was excavated in 1995 and has already benefited from two publications (1996 and 2004). Two of the furnaces of this workshop will be integrated into the architectural study.
The Contours workshop explored exhaustively in 2004 (dir. St. Mauné) and the anthracological lots remain to be studied, while 7 of the 9 excavated kilns must undergo a thorough comparative architectural analysis. The rest of the dossier is completed and drafted (AMG dating, physicochemical analyses of the productions, archaeological and ceramological studies).
The workshop of Saint-Bézard in Aspiran was excavated between 2005 and 2013 (dir. St. Mauné and Ch. Carrato). The AMG datings were carried out (9 ovens) and the furnaces 10, 12 and 3 were thoroughly studied; the charcoal furnaces (only 2 lots) remain to be studied. Two furnaces of the 1st century AD will be the subject of an in-depth study. This data will be used in the comparisons set out in the monograph and the Estagnola article.
The Estagnola workshop in Aspiran was excavated in 2014 and 2015 and this dossier will be closed in July 2016 (dir. St. Mauné and O. Bourgeon). Three of the 5 excavated furnaces will be the subject of an architectural study and the 5 furnaces will be dated by AMG. The charcoal lots are abundant, of very good quality and will be exhaustively treated.
There are many scientific objectives and contributions:
- To make available to the scientific community a series of reflections and conclusions concerning the architecture, volume and production capacity of a series of 15 furnaces (13 to be studied, 3 already made) dated between the beginning of the 1st century and the first half of the 2nd century AD, all located in an area of a few km2 where research on the issue of pottery craft and viticulture has been very active for 20 years.
- Allow precise measurements of technological developments thanks to the very tight chronologies provided by AMG dating and the use of Bayesian chronological modeling (chronomodel software).
- Allow anthracological analyses to address the fuel issue and to clarify the wood supply strategies of the master supply houses; the data from Estagnola will enable us to answer questions about the portage of wood on the Hérault, the presence of an alluvial forest established in the High-Empire, the riparian river and the existence of a wooded area between the basin of Villeveyrac and the Hérault valley.
